Adri-Ann Brown and her husband Robert bought this West Australian property at Gnarabup Beach, Margaret River, in May last year with the intention of demolishing it and building their dream home. But as is often the case with falling in love, the couple didn’t realise at first how attracted they were to the original home, and how attached they would become. Lucky they didn’t do anything rash!
”We wanted to knock the house down and rebuild, making the most of the beautiful sea views,” Adri-Ann recalls. “But while we were deciding what to build and to do with the land, we thought we might as well use the house as our weekender, and for short-term rentals.”
With this in mind, the couple were keen to spend as little money as possible on the place. “So the renovations were fairly superficial,” Adri-Ann says. However, painting the house inside and out was a must – the exterior was dark maroon and dark green, and the interior was a depressing landscape of dark stained wood. “Painting made a huge difference,” Adri-Ann says. “Just changing colours – making it white inside and out – has enhanced it so much.”
